VAT’s The Problem Campaign

Did you know the UK imposes a massive 20% VAT on hospitality? That is far higher than the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy (who all support hospitality with lower rates, some as low as 7%). Even Ireland is shortly dropping theirs to 9%.

This crushing tax rate forces your favourite local family pubs, independent coffee shops, and community spaces into a corner. To survive, they have to curtail services, cut opening hours, and stop growing. Worse still, just hitting the VAT registration threshold can instantly wipe out up to 16% of a business’s revenue.

Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge is spearheading the national #VATsTheProblem campaign, and Heathfield Chamber of Commerce is backing it 100%. We need your voice to protect the local venues you love.

Take action in 60 seconds:
✔️ Click the link below.
✔️ Sign the national petition.
✔️ Demand a fair reduction to 10% VAT.

Let’s stand together to protect our jobs, support our independent businesses, and keep Heathfield thriving.

Menopause Education Day at Union Church

Make sure you come along for one of these informative and fun sessions on Sat 20th June…

Session 1 (9:30-11am) is for men who want to support the women in their life and ask ‘those’ questions. It won’t be embarrassing and you will earn a load of ‘brownie points’ from your significant other for coming – they will even throw in a bacon and sausage butty!

Session 2 (11:30am – 13:00) is for women who want to be more empowered and inspired! (light lunch included as is a chance to ask more questions and get to know one another)

Session 3 (14:30-16:00) is for employers, carers and those supporting women at this sometimes tricky, time of life. The law is changing and employers have to show they have had some kind of awareness training, so get your certificate here!

Volunteer Picnic & Funday coming to Heathfield in June

Wealden Volunteering have been matching volunteers with local charities for more than 30 years and they’re inviting the community to celebrate volunteering at a special summer event.

The Volunteer Picnic & Funday will take place on Saturday, June 6, during National Volunteers’ Week, at Heathfield Community Centre, Sheepsetting Lane, from 12pm to 4pm.

The event aims to raise awareness of the charity’s work, celebrate volunteers everywhere, and encourage more people to get involved with local good causes. In 2025, the charity placed 409 adult and youth volunteers with local organisations — a 62% increase on 2024.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic and settle in for the afternoon. There will be entertainment from local music and theatre groups, face painting, charity stalls, games and fun activities.

Food and refreshments will also be available, including a local pizza truck, an ice cream van, and a café run by the charity, stocked with items donated by local businesses.

Organisers are also hoping the event will help raise funds to keep the charity’s office running, which is staffed entirely by volunteers.

A spokesperson said: “This will be a real community event, celebrating all volunteers and all things volunteering. We’d love people to come along, enjoy the afternoon, and find out more about how they can make a difference locally.”
