Chamber Member and Sussex-based female business owner — Melanie Essex of Manley Bookkeeping Services — was announced as an official finalist at the Female Business Awards 2025, a UK-wide initiative celebrating the achievements of female-led small businesses.
Chamber Chair, Richard Williams said “It is a proud moment not only for our Chamber but for the local business community to be so strongly represented at a national level”.
The prestigious Female Business Awards gala celebration evening was held at the Victoria & Albert Marriott Hotel in Manchester on 14 November 2025. The awards recognise the success and contribution of female-led small businesses across the UK, with over 800 nominations received across 16 categories this year.
Melanie Essex, founder of Manley Bookkeeping Services, was confirmed as an official finalist in the Finance Business category.
Hazel Woodward, co-founder of the Female Business Awards, said:
“The judging panel evaluated each nominee on a range of factors, including marketing activity, client testimonials, business innovation, and the owner’s passion for their industry and clients. To be named a finalist demonstrates exceptional standards of service, dedication, and impact within their industry.”
Melanie said:
“Being named a finalist at the Female Business Awards in the Finance Business category has meant a great deal to me. As a sole trader who started my business just over a year ago, my journey has involved determination, long hours, and self-belief. To receive this recognition so early on feels incredibly rewarding — it validates the risks I took and the passion I bring to supporting my clients. It has given me renewed confidence, motivation, and pride in how far I’ve come.”
Manley Bookkeeping and Accountancy Services specialises in providing tailored bookkeeping support for small businesses and sole traders. The business focuses on making finances clear and accessible, helping owners understand their numbers, make informed decisions, and feel confident in the financial health of their business.
A special mention goes to fellow Chamber Members Debbie of Debbie Hammond Designer Travel and Shakira of Flintwise Insurance Brokers Ltd, who accompanied the finalists to the awards.
Female Business Awards co-host Janine Friston, founder of the Female Business Network, said: “We are thrilled to celebrate this year’s finalists and winners, who have made such a positive impact on their clients and communities. The Female Business Awards aim to recognise female-led small businesses who often juggle multiple responsibilities and still create meaningful success. It’s inspiring to see their dedication and achievements acknowledged.”

Lightning Fibre, the full fibre broadband network operator and Internet Service Provider (ISP), has secured a remarkable industry award hat-trick at the annual Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA) Awards.
The ISPA Awards shine a spotlight on the organisations and individuals driving the UK’s digital future, recognising providers for their passion, innovation, and commitment. Lightning Fibre was among the night’s big winners, taking home multiple accolades.

The judging process considers overall service levels, packages, performance, customer satisfaction, value, fair pricing, and support for vulnerable customers, as well as publicly available data from sources like Ofcom and Trustpilot. Lightning Fibre’s win demonstrates significant improvement in customer experience and strong customer base growth over the past 12 months.

The 2025 win marks the third consecutive year Lightning Fibre has secured the top prize in this category, solidifying its commitment to service excellence:

To win the Best Customer Experience award alongside Best Consumer ISP shows we are leading the way in connecting communities with both speed and service they can trust.”

White Feather Funerals – Five Years Service to the Community
This month marks five years since White Feather Funerals first opened its doors in Heathfield, offering care and support to local families through some of life’s hardest moments.
In a message reflecting on the milestone, the team expressed gratitude to the community, saying they feel honoured to have walked alongside so many families over the years. “Every family we have served has shaped the business we are today,” they said. “We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us and the opportunity to provide care with dignity and compassion.”
From the beginning, the funeral home’s aim has been to offer a truly personal service built on respect and understanding. Looking back on their first five years, they say they are humbled by the journey so far and hopeful for the future.
“Thank you for allowing us to care for your loved ones and for making us a part of your community,” the team added. “Here’s to many more years of care,” commented Lucy Atabey, Founder of White Feather Funerals
